Essential oils production started in Haiti in the 1940s and exports displayed an upward trend from 1950 to 1974 when they accounted for almost 10% of the total export value and declined significantly in the next 20 years. This happened because in 1975 the government put up an export monopoly in order to control Haitian price products all over the world, mainly in the United States.
